Let me be the first to welcome you and your child to kindergarten!!
My name is Laura Smith, and I have been teaching at Western Schools for eight years. Prior to working at Western, I worked for Jackson Public Schools for seven years. I have taught in many capacities including kindergarten, first grade and Reading Recovery. Currently, I am teaching kindergarten at Warner.
I have been married for ten years and have two children of my own. My daughter, Faith is 8 and is a second grader and my son, Luke is 6 and is currently in kindergarten. The kindergarten children end up hearing a lot about my own children, and they especially enjoying hearing about the antics of Luke. In my "free time" I enjoy running, reading, going to the movies, and spending time with my family.
Kindergarten is your child's first school experience, and as such I want it to be a positive one.
I love working with young children, and believe kindergarten classrooms should be fun and interactive. The main focus in kindergarten is on Language Arts and Math, however Science and Social Studies are incorporated into the curriculum as well. The children also attend Special classes that consist of Gym, Music, Art, and Character and Career Education. I am a firm believer in meeting the needs of each child, and in my attempt to do this, the majority of our Language Arts instruction takes place in small group stations. I also believe in a well structured classroom consisting of high expectations. I thank you for the opportunity to work with you and your child this year and consider it a privledge to be your child's teacher.
